India did not vote on the UN Security Council resolution condemning Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and calling for the withdrawal of Russian forces.

Friday’s UN Security Council vote was on Friday for the resolution that was sponsored by the US, Albania, and supported by many other countries, including Poland, Italy and Germany.

Eleven countries voted for the resolution, while three, including India abstained.

After the meeting, India’s Envoy to the UN T S Tirumurti gave an explanation of vote (EOV), which explained the reasons behind India’s position in the matter.

Russia vetoes UN resolution deploring invasion of Ukraine; China, India abstain

India demanded in its EOV that the country return to diplomacy and respect sovereignty and territorial integrity.

It appealed for all parties to immediately cease violence and hostilities.

“India is deeply troubled by the recent developments in Ukraine. We demand that all efforts be made to stop violence and hostilities immediately. T S Tirumurti, India’s Permanent Representative to UN, stated that no solution can be reached at the expense of human life.

“It is regrettable that the path to diplomacy was abandoned. It is essential that we return to this path. India decided to abstain from this resolution for all these reasons,” he said.

The envoy stated that India had been in contact with all parties and urged them to get back to the table.

The immediate priority is to ensure the safety and welfare of the Indian community, especially students who are stranded and their evacuation from Ukraine.

Tirumurti stated that India could still reach out to other relevant parties by abstaining. This would help to bridge the gap and find a middle ground, with the goal of fostering dialogue and diplomacy.

An earlier draft of this resolution proposed that it be moved under Chapter VII of UN Charter. This provides the framework within the UN Charter in which the Security Council can take enforcement actions. This was not included in the final version of the resolution that was submitted for vote.
