After fresh snowfall at various locations and multiple landslides, the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was shut down for vehicular traffic Saturday.
The only all-weather road connecting Kashmir to the rest of India is the national highway.
The Banihal-Qazigund section of the highway was subject to overnight snowfall. Landslides and the shooting of stones from hillocks were caused by heavy rains at Rompadi–Banihal and Shalgardh–Wagan, Moumpassi–Ramsu and Panthiyal.
Numerous trucks were left stranded in various locations after the highway was closed.
The weather has improved and road-clearance agencies are urging people and machines to clean up the highway.
Six inches of snow fell in the Marwah region of the Kishtwar District. Dooru and Pahalgam, in the Anantnag region, received four and five inches respectively.
