SRH vs KKR: Tom Moody reveals reason behind Dale Steyn’s jubilant reaction to Umran Malik’s unplayable yorker

Dale Steyn jumped off his seat at the SunRisers Hyderabad dug-out, clenching his fists and celebrating the unplayable Yorker that Umran Malik bowled to Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer on Friday. Steyn took fans down memory lane as the former South Africa fast bowler embraced spin-bowling coach Muttiah Muralitharan with the same enthusiasm and joy that he showcased when he rattled the opposition batter’s defence during his heyday.

The television footage of Dale Steyn celebrating Umran Malik’s Yorker went viral on social media. The young pacer from Jammu and Kashmir gave SRH a huge breakthrough, going through the defence of in-form Iyer in the 10th over with the searing yorker.

SRH vs KKR, IPL 2022: Report | Highlights

Umran went on finish his quota of 4 overs with terrific figures of 2/27. KKR batters found his express pace too hot to handle that it seemed the only way of scoring runs against the tearaway pacer was edges behind the wicket. At one point, SRH captain Kane Williamson even had all his 4 boundary riders behind the wicket in Umran’s over.

Speaking after SRH’s dominant 7-wicket win, head coach Tom Moody explained Steyn and Muralitharan’s reactions to Umran’s wicket of Iyer.

“There is a lot of planning that goes on with any sort of match-up against any opponent. I think the emotion that was shown in the dug-out was about the joy for a young fast bowler getting such an important wicket for us,” Moody said.

“Umran has been embraced by the franchise. He has been embraced by the team. There is no question about that. Everyone enjoys his bowling. He bowled very well (Against KKR). He stuck to his plans and we were quite meticulous with our planning to help him understand his role.”

Moody added that Umran is extremely fortunate to have a mentor like Dale Steyn as the young India pacer is leaning aplenty on the go from the legendary South African bowler.

The Australian tactician, furthermore, shed light on the team’s expectations from Umran Malik, saying SRH understand that the young pacer will go for runs but all that they expect him to do is run in and keep intimidating batters with his pace.

STEYN BOOST FOR UMRAN

Umran has already bowled the five fastest deliveries of IPL 2022, consistently touching speeds in excess of 150 kph. On Friday, Umran showcased improved control in his bowling.

“At the end of the day, when you are bowling 150 kph an hour, you are likely to go for runs. He goes for a lot of runs behind the wicket. It’s not like he is getting smashed down the ground or through the covers.

“So you got to accept that his style of bowling, there’s going to be a higher economy to that. And his role is to run in and express himself and be himself. We try and build a field around that so that he can express his fast bowler.

“He is clearly still at the beginning of his journey. He is learning every single day and having the likes of Dale Steyn around him is a huge boost because he is learning so much on the go. We accept he is going to go for runs, what we want to see is the return in terms of wickets,” Moody added.

After restricting KKR to 175 in 20 overs, SunRisers rode on quickfire half-centuries from Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram to gun down the target in just 17.5 overs and register their third successive victory of IPL 2022.
