PM Modi to visit Jammu on April 24 for Panchayati Raj Diwas: Lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha

SRINAGAR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Jammu on April 24 (Sunday) on the occasion of Panchayati Raj Diwas, said J&K lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday. PM Modi is scheduled to fly from Jammu airport to Palli panchayat in the border district of Samba, where he will address over 30,000 members of J&K’s rural bodies. Around 700 panchayats across the country will be virtually connected with the event which is expected to witness the participation of about 1 lakh people, the LG said.

Officials said Palli will be celebrated as the nation’s first carbon-neutral rural body with the PM inaugurating a mega solar plant there to provide clean electricity to all its 340 households. The 500KV solar plant, built under the central government’s Gram Urja Swaraj programme, is being set up by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research PSU in a record time of 20 days.

Modi had last visited J&K to celebrate Diwali with Army troops in Rajouri on October 27, 2019, and later came to Nowshera on November 3, 2021.

“All arrangements are in place for the PM’s arrival in Jammu to celebrate National Panchayati Raj Day. There will be a groundbreaking ceremony where the PM will launch hydel power projects and other developmental projects. More than four lakh direct-indirect employment opportunities would be generated in different sectors,” LG Sinha said. The PM is also expected to launch industrial investments worth Rs 70,000 crore.

The PM’s visit comes at a time when the Delimitation Commission on J&K is about to complete its work, with elections in the newly-formed UT expected soon. The security grid has been fortified across the UT as the trip also coincides with a rise in targeted attacks on civilians, mostly migrants and minorities like Kashmiri Pandits, with 10 such attacks from March till date. Deputy Commissioners in various districts have issued orders under Sec 144 of the CrPC asking business establishments, places of worship, market associations and educational institutions to have CCTV cameras in place, with a provision of storing feed for up to 30 days.

Palli residents are overjoyed about the PM’s impending visit. Located just 17km from Jammu city, the village has witnessed major transformation with the laying of macadamized roads, an upgraded Panchayat Ghar, a renovated government high school building, a new pond and improved playgrounds.
