Car fire kills 5 of a family returning from Chhattisgarh wedding

RAIPUR: An elderly couple and their three daughters were burnt alive when their car burst into flames after crashing into a bridge in Chhattisgarh’s Rajnandgaon district early on Friday. CM Bhupesh Baghel condoled the deaths.

Police said the family was returning from a wedding in neighbouring Balod when they met with an accident around 1.30am on Rajnandgaon-Khairagarh road near Singarpur village. The car, a hatchback, suddenly swerved out of control and slammed into a bridge. The impact hurled it into a field and sparked a fire, Rajnandgaon SP Santosh Singh said.

The vehicle was engulfed in flames within seconds, giving no time for the passengers to escape, a witness told police. Alerted by the witness, a police team sped to the spot but the five had burnt to death in minutes. Cops cordoned off the area and a forensic team got to work to find out why the accident happened. The bodies were sent for autopsy.

Police identified the victims as businessman Subhash Kochar (60), his wife Kanti (58), and their daughters. Kochar has a business in Khairagarh. Markets were shut in town on Friday in mourning.
