INSACOG, in its weekly bulletin of April 11 that was released on Wednesday, said the incidences of suspected recombinants and the possible public health relevance are being closely monitored.

It said a total of 2,40,570 samples have been sequenced till now.

“Based on genome sequencing analysis, very few recombinant variants have been discovered in India. So far, none showed either increased transmission (locally or otherwise) or was associated with severe disease or hospitalisation,” it said.

On the global scenario, the INSACOG said two recombinant variants — XD and XE — are being closely monitored worldwide. XD, which has an Omicron S gene incorporated into a Delta genome, is found primarily in France.

Govt approves Rs 60,939 cr subsidy for P&K fertilisers for Apr-Sep

The government on Wednesday approved a subsidy of Rs 60,939.23 crore for phosphatic and potassic (P&K) fertilisers, including DAP, for the first six months of this fiscal, as part of its efforts to provide soil nutrients to farmers at an affordable price. The Union Cabinet has approved nutrient-based subsidy (NBS) rates for Phosphatic and Potassic fertilisers for the Kharif season (from April 1, 2022, to September 30, 2022). Briefing media about the Cabinet decision, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said the Cabinet has approved a subsidy of Rs 60,939 crore on P&K fertilisers for the Kharif season against the subsidy of around Rs 57,150 crore on these nutrients for the entire last fiscal.

Fire at govt hospital in Chennai; none injured

A fire broke out at one of the buildings of Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital here on Wednesday, but no casualties or injuries were reported. Three oxygen cylinders kept in the old building exploded, triggering panic among the people. Patients undergoing treatment in wards on the floor, where the mishap occurred were quickly moved to safety, hospital sources said. According to an official of the Fire and Rescue Services department, they received a call about the accident at 11 am and immediately four tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames in one of the blocks.

German auto club: drive less to cut imports

Germany’s influential ADAC auto club is calling on its 21 million members to help reduce the country’s oil imports from Russia by driving less and taking their foot off the gas where possible. In an open letter posted on its website on Wednesday, the club’s leadership said driving more slowly and anticipating stops were among the ways drivers could reduce fuel consumption by up to 20%. NTPC signs MoU with Energy Vault for gravity-based energy storage technology

India’s largest power generating firm NTPC Limited on Wednesday said it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Swiss energy storage company Energy Vault Holdings for gravity-based energy storage technology. The objective of the MoU is to collaborate and formalise a long-term strategic partnership for the deployment of Energy Vault’s EVx™ gravity-based energy storage technology and software solutions based on the outcome of a joint feasibility study, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Power. The technology also offers beneficial utilisation of coal ash for manufacturing of composite blocks for Energy Vault’s gravity-based energy storage system.

Delhi school to remain shut for a week after fire breaks out in Bhalswa landfill

Delhi’s Gyan Sarovar School has been temporarily closed after a fire broke out at the Bhalswa landfill near the school. Speaking to ANI, Narayana, Community organiser said, “It is not safe to keep children here because of the smoke coming out of the fire. We have decided to keep the school closed for a week.” Earlier in the day, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai informed that soon after the incident, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has been instructed to inquire and submit the report within 24 hours.

LIC IPO price band at Rs 902-949 per share; offer opens on May 4

Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) has set its price band for the Initial Public Offer (IPO) at Rs 902 to Rs 949 per equity share. The public offer starts on May 4 and will remain open for bidders till May 9, Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey said on Wednesday. The size of LIC IPO is set to be the largest so far in the country. The government targets to raise Rs 20,557.23 crore by offloading 3.5 per cent of its equity stake or 22.13 crore shares of LIC. This is substantially lower than the earlier projection of about Rs 60,000 crore.

The Union Cabinet has approved financial support of Rs 820 crore for India Post Payments Bank, a source said on Wednesday. The support will help state-run payments bank to penetrate deeper into the country, especially in the rural area and work towards financial inclusion. “There was a proposal to provide Rs 820 crore financial support to India Post Payments Bank (IPPB). It has been approved by the Cabinet,” the source told PTI.

Silver futures rise on spot demand

Silver prices on Wednesday rose by Rs 155 to Rs 65,123 per kilogram in futures trade as participants widened their bets on a firm spot demand. On the Multi Commodity Exchange, silver contracts for May delivery gained Rs 155 or 0.24 per cent to Rs 65,123 per kg in 4,568 lots. Analysts said the rise in silver prices was mainly due to fresh positions built up by participants on a positive domestic trend.

Gold futures gain on fresh bets

Gold prices on Wednesday marginally increased by Rs 8 to Rs 51,592 per 10 gram in futures trade as speculators created fresh positions on a firm spot demand. On the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold contracts for June delivery traded higher by Rs 8 or 0.02 per cent at Rs 51,592 per 10 gram in a business turnover of 14,016 lots. Fresh positions built up by participants led to the rise in gold prices, analysts said.

FM Nirmala Sitharaman highlights India’s steps towards digitization

Highlighting several digitization-related progressive steps in the budget this year, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday (local time) said that there is a continuous digital nudge by the government across different sectors. Sitharman’s remarks came during the ‘Business Roundtable: Investing in India’s Digital Revolution’ organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and co-hosted by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) in Palo Alto, California. Alluding to the recently announced Central bank digital currency, digital banks, and digital university, Sitharaman stated, “There is a continuous digital nudge by the government across sectors.” Interacting with the participants, the Finance Minister said that India aims to introduce digital currency by 2023. However, she added that aiding financial inclusion was not the sole purpose of the proposed digital currency, unlike in other countries. “The government and RBI are looking into its several commercial use purposes and not just financial inclusion, which is largely achieved through the JAM trinity,” she said.

Shanghai’s vice head of its health committee, Zhao Dandan, announced Wednesday that the city would begin another round of testing for city residents over the next few days to determine which districts were lower risk. Areas that have been declared to have achieved “societal zero COVID” could see some measure of limited freedom.

LIC IPO press meet at 12.30 pm today

India has slashed the size of its biggest initial public offering by about 60%, pressing ahead with the sale even as the war in Ukraine continues to weigh on investor demand. The Centre will sell 221.4 million shares of LIC at Rs 902 to Rs 949 each, according to the final prospectus filed with exchanges. The offering could raise as much as $2.7 billion at the top end of the price range. Even so, the IPO will be India’s largest, surpassing the 183 billion rupee sale by One97 Communications Ltd., the operator of Paytm, in November.
