Hyderabad’s Biological E to get mRNA technology from WHO to produce Covid-19 vaccines

Biological E Limited (BE), the Hyderabad-based vaccine maker that has developed a recombinant sub-unit protein vaccine Corbevax for Covid-19, has now been selected as a recipient of mRNA technology from the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s technology transfer hub.

No impact of WHO action on Covaxin, have not supplied to any UN agency: Bharat Biotech

With WHO announcing the suspension of Covaxin supply through UN procurement agencies, Bharat Biotech sources said on Monday the pharma company has not supplied the Covid-19 vaccine to any UN agency and no impact of the suspension would be felt. So far, sources said, the firm has supplied vaccines to the Indian government and nine countries under the Centre’s Vaccine Maitri programme, and has made direct commercial supply under emergency use authorisation.

China sends military, doctors to Shanghai to test 26 million residents for Covid

China has sent the military and thousands of healthcare workers into Shanghai to help carry out Covid-19 tests for all of its 26 million residents as cases continued to rise on Monday, in one of the country’s biggest-ever public health responses. Some residents woke up before dawn for white-suited healthcare workers to swab their throats as part of nucleic acid testing at their housing compounds, many queuing up in their pyjamas and standing the required two metres apart.

“It’s (WHO post EUL inspection) a routine inspection for Covaxin,” Bharat Biotech further said.

Reacting after the World Health Organization (WHO) suspended supplies of Covaxin through United Nations agencies, Bharat Biotech said, “Received some feedback, will do those modifications. WHO has said nothing related to safety or efficacy.”

According to the ministry, the active caseload stands at 12,597 which accounts for 0.03 per cent of the country’s total positive cases. The daily positivity rate stands at 0.29 per cent.

With 13 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the death toll from COVID-19 in the country stands at 5,21,358.

Also, the number of active cases fell below the 13,000 mark after a gap of 714 days.

With 913 new COVID-19 cases reported in India in the last 24 hours, the number of daily new infections on Monday fell below the 1000 mark after 715 days, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Shanghai lockdown could be particularly costly for China
