Former Congress minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu has been arrested by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau in relation to a scam in grain markets. Sources confirmed that he, along with his subordinates, allegedly executed a transport scam. Charges against the former minister alleged irregularities in issuing tender bids for grain lifting in Ludhiana.
Allegations state that Bhushan, his personal assistant and transporters, had executed a scam by listing scooters, low commercial vehicles and cars as trucks to claim transport subsidies. Reports suggest that irregularities summed up to the tune of Rs 2000 crore.
While Bhushan has pleaded for his innocence and asked authorities not to name him in a ‘false’ case, charges under sections 420 (cheating), 409 (criminal breach of trust), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), 471 (using forged documents as genuine), 120B (criminal conspiracy).
Bhushan was the MLA from Ludhiana West in 2012 and 2017 and the minister for food supplies under the former Congress Cabinet in Punjab under former chief ministers Captain Amarinder Singh and Charanjit Singh Channi. He lost his seat in the 2022 Punjab Assembly polls.
