6 dead as bus falls into river in Jharkhand’s Hazaribag, many feared trapped

At least 8 people died and 12 others were injured after a bus fell into a river in Jharkhand’s Hazaribag district. The incident occurred on Saturday and over 50 people were onboard the bus.

“7 people have died and 12 others were injured. All the passengers have been rescued. Those with minor injuries have been released from the hospital,” said Superintendent of Police Manoj Ratan.

The accident took place when the Ranchi-bound bus coming from Giridih district broke the railing of a bridge and fell into a dry spot in Siwanne River in Tatijharia Police Station area, SP Manoj Ratan Chothe said, according to PTI.

“Two passengers died on the spot, while four others were declared dead by doctors at Sadar Hospital in Hazaribag. The fatality figures may go up as some are seriously injured. We are preparing to send them to Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) in Ranchi for better treatment,” Manoj Ratan Chothe said.

Taking to Twitter, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren said, “I am saddened by the death of passengers due to the bus falling from the bridge in Tatijharia. May God give peace to the departed souls and give strength to the bereaved families to bear this sad time. Relief and rescue operations are being carried out by the district administration. I wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

Jharkhand Health Minister Banna Gupta also tweeted and said, “I have directed Civil Surgeon Hazaribag to make arrangements for better treatment of the injured.”

Meanwhile, Paramjit Kaur, a survivor of the accident, said that “The road was good. They were travelling to Ranchi. All of a sudden, the bus turned turtle and came crashing down the bridge.”

Former Union minister Jayant Sinha said that the incident was shocking and tragic. He further said, ‘What led to the accident is being investigated by the SP. The black spots need to be identified. It remains a subject of an investigation if the drivers drive the bus properly or not. Whether some training is needed or their licence needs to be cancelled.”
