  • The objective of the tanking operation is to assess repairs
  • Engineers will fill the mammoth fuel tanks of the SLS with Liquid Hydrogen
  • The tanking operation will set the stage for the third attempt at launching Artemis-1

Days ahead of the third attempt to launch the ambitious Artemis-1 mission to the Moon, Nasa is set to load fuel on the Space Launch System (SLS) to check the validity of seals placed after leaks were detected in two scrubbed attempts. Both the core stage and upper stage tanks will be filled with fuel with the Orion spacecraft on top of the SLS at the launch pad.

The objective of the tanking operation is to assess repair to address the hydrogen leak, load propellants into the rocket’s tanks using the new procedures, conduct the kick-start bleed, and perform a pre-pressurization test.

During the tanking operation, engineers will begin filling the mammoth fuel tanks of the SLS with Liquid Hydrogen as per the new regulations which ensure a much slower way to load the fuel. Nasa said that new cryogenic loading procedures and ground automation will transition temperatures and pressures more slowly during tanking to reduce the likelihood of leaks that could be caused by rapid changes in temperature or pressure.

The tanking operation will set the stage for the third attempt at launching Artemis-1 on a maiden mission to Moon and beyond. The spacecraft will go nearly 60,000 kilometers beyond the Moon and return. The 42-day journey will set the stage for astronauts to board the spacecraft for future crewed missions to land on the surface of the Moon.
