By India Today Web Desk: Lionel Messi was a content man. He had given up on his World Cup hopes when he retired after the Copa America final in 2016. He found the energy and courage to reverse his decision and return to lead Argentina in the World Cup in Russia but things did not go according to plan as they were knocked out in the Round of 16.

On Sunday, December 18, Messi had finally realised his childhood dream. He had done what Diego Maradona did for Argentina 36 years ago. He had ended the long wait for the World Cup trophy in his fifth appearance in the showpiece event.

There were no tears of joy as Gonzalo Montiel sent the decisive shot past Hugo Lloris in the penalty shoot-out to help Argentina beat France 4-2 on penalties.

Messi carried the team on his shoulders with able support from his teammates, Lionel Scaloni added a new lease of life to the veteran superstar, who was sizzling in his last dance in Qatar. In fact, Messi’s family was watching the man in action in the final, pulling the strings for the Albiceleste.

Messi scored 7 times in the World Cup in Qatar, 2 of them coming in the final as the Paris Saint-Germain star put the team ahead twice against France in the final. Messi took his World Cup tally to 13. He won the Golden Ball while Kylian Mbappe, with 8 goals in Qatar, won the Golden Boot.

But, none of the numbers mattered for Messi as he looked relieved and delighted at the same time, knowing he has delivered and secured his status as the Greatest of All Time.

It was a heartwarming moment as Messi celebrated with his teammates with dance moves as they acknowledged the applause from strong Argentina at the Lusail Stadium, which dazzled with light blue colours.

It was special to see Messi’s children running on to him to celebrate their father’s biggest moment of a decorated and envious career.

Messi scored from the spot in the 23rd minute to put Argentina 1-0 ahead after which Angel di Maria made it 2-0. However, Mbappe scored twice in 2 minutes in the 81st minute as France forced extra-time.

Messi scored again in the 108th minute and celebrated wildly, knowing he had put Argentina on the cusp of glory. However, Mbappe struck again with just 2 minutes to go to force penalties.

In the penalties, it was Messi who set the tone for Argentina by taking the first kick and slotting it past Lloris. France finished the second-best team in the final, missing twice in the shoot-out.

Argentina won their 3rd World Cup title as Messi emulated his idol and late Maradona with a spectacular fairytale in Qatar.
